Hyunjae

This is Hyunjae. Joseon Korea, 1742.
She was the first story I wrote, and I still think of her as the spine of the whole thing. Hyunjae runs her world through composure. Not the brittle kind that cracks under pressure; hers is a craft, practised daily, the way other people practise calligraphy. Every word measured before it leaves her. Every feeling sorted, labelled, and put where it belongs. She has filed her entire life this way and it is worked, which is precisely her problem.
Because then a feeling arrives that will not file. It has no drawer. It has no name. And a woman whose whole survival is precision suddenly has one thing in her that refuses to be handled.
Watching her negotiate with it is the story. Whether she lets anyone witness the negotiation is up to you, and you can read her free in the browser.
