Reine, rewritten

Reine's story has been rewritten. The same way I did Hyunjae's: not a polish and not a patch, but new prose, from the first line to the last.
She was the second woman I wrote, and I have wanted to come back to her for a long time. The bones of her story were always the ones I wanted, a woman the whole of Paris turns to look at, and the one thing she makes that she will let no one see. But I wrote her in the stretch where I was still learning how much room these stories need, and when I read her again after the others, I could hear where I had hurried her. Scenes that should have been lived in went by as summary. The rooms had no weather. Her three roads leaned on the same few moments instead of each becoming its own.
So I gave her the time. Every chapter is new prose now. The long season in that windowless studio is a place you sit inside, not a paragraph you pass through. The quiet between two people who will not say the thing out loud is allowed to run as long as it truly does. And her three roads have grown properly apart: the one where she is heard without being seen, the one where she is read all the way to the bottom, and the one where she is her own only audience. Each reads now like it belongs to a different life she might have chosen, because it does.
The gentlest of those roads had the most of my attention this time. It was the one most at risk of reading as the sad one, the settling, and it is not that. It is a real thing, chosen with both eyes open, and I wanted the prose to earn it instead of only insisting on it.
If you have read Reine before, this is worth reading again. The shape of her story has not changed, and every place your choices led is a place they still lead. Your saves carry over. What changed is that she is finally being given the room I learned to give the women who came after her.
Two stories still to come after this one. Thank you for staying with it.
