The book can only hold one
18 Sep 2026 Perpetūra
On 14 August the fifth and final story went live in the browser. Perpetūra was finished in the only way it was ever going to be finished: with every route in it equally true. Nobody had to choose among them. You chose, story by story, and whichever path you took was simply what had happened to her. That was the design from the first story onward. There was no correct version underneath the others, waiting to be found.
Then a book had to be assembled, and a book cannot hold more than one version of a life. It reads in order, front to back, on a device with no branches in it. Somewhere in turning the stories into an ebook, I had to decide, for each woman, which version of her life the book would say happened.
That is a different kind of work from writing the routes in the first place. Each story branches into three to five of them, most of them different ways of coming to know one of the people around her. One of them is always the path where she chooses herself instead. I wrote every route as a full resolution, none of them a lesser draft waiting to lose to the others. So when it came to Book One, I was not picking the best version. I was picking the one the book would say out loud, knowing the others were just as finished, just as true, and would not be in it.
I want to be honest about how strange that was to sit with. I built these women to answer a hard question more than one way on purpose, because I did not believe any single answer was the honest one. Then a format arrived that could hold one answer each, and I had to pick.
Book One, The Ones Before, is out today. It holds three of the five: Hyunjae in Joseon Korea, Reine in Belle Époque Paris, and Liuyan on the Tang Dynasty Silk Road. Each one is a single route through, read straight through, with nothing to choose and nothing to unlock. If you only ever open the book, you will meet one Hyunjae, one Reine, one Liuyan, and you will have no way of knowing from the page alone that the others exist.
They do exist, though, and writing the book took none of them away. The interactive version is still free in the browser, still every route for all five women, still asking you to choose rather than telling you what happened. The book did not draw from a smaller well to fill its pages. It set one path in ink because ink cannot hold more than one, and left the rest exactly where they were.
Book Two, The Origin, follows on 25 September and carries the pattern back to where it started. It makes the same decision again, once for each story it holds, for the same reason. The interactive version gets to keep every answer open, and a book has to choose one to say.
If you want the version where nothing was decided for you, the browser is where it lives, and it costs nothing to open. If you want the version that fits in a pocket and asks nothing of you but to keep turning the page, that is what is out today.
