The book is finished
21 Aug 2026 Pantheon
Chapter sixty-three was drafted yesterday. The commit message I wrote at the time says THE BOOK IS FULLY DRAFTED, 63 OF 63, in capitals, which tells you roughly what kind of evening it was.
It came to just over one hundred and sixty-six thousand words, which is about half as long again as a typical thriller. I am telling advance readers that up front, because a book that takes a fortnight rather than a weekend should say so before somebody starts it.
Finishing the draft was not finishing the book. The manuscript then went through five levels in a day: an editorial review of the whole thing, then developmental, line, copy and proof passes, each one a different question asked of the same text. That is on top of the editing every chapter had already been through as it was written. If you want one number for what that costs, the manuscript has been touched by five hundred and fifty-three separate commits, which is roughly nine passes per chapter.
Not all of it was polish. The late chapters were rewritten after I read the ending back and found it too tidy, too obviously arranged by somebody who knew how it came out. The fix was not clever. I put the flat chapters next to two earlier ones that already had the right temperature and kept working until they matched.
The most humbling part of the week had nothing to do with prose. Writing the back-cover copy took three separate attempts, because twice I caught myself giving away things the book spends dozens of chapters protecting. Describing a book about a woman who cannot be known turns out to be a genuinely awkward problem: every honest sentence about her is a small betrayal of her. And while filling in the shop paperwork I very nearly filed it under a subject code that means, in the trade, Clean and Wholesome romance. It is not that. It would have been a memorable way to find out how many people read the label.
The pre-order is open now on Kindle, and the other shops list on their own timetables over the coming weeks. The book is not exclusive to anywhere, and every link goes up on its own page as it opens.
Out 2 October 2026.
Update, 3 September 2026. The paragraph above is out of date, and I am leaving it where it is rather than quietly fixing it. Pantheon is in KDP Select now: Kindle only, and included in Kindle Unlimited from release day. A first book by a name nobody knows asks a stranger to take a chance on it; a borrow asks them for nothing. Select runs in ninety-day terms, so it is not a door I have locked behind me.
